Why wasn’t Douglas plus Billups working?

Let’s quantify how the Knicks play when Toney Douglas teams with Chancey Billups vs. when he’s the lone point guard with the help of the great BasketballValue site. We know his overall plus-minus right now post-trade is plus-30.

When Douglas plays with Billups, the Knicks team on the floor is plus-1 on the opposition in 31.25 minutes. Post-trade, when Douglas plays the point by himself (he’s officially listed as the two-guard with Billups and does seem to play that role), his Knicks units are plus-32 in 216.4 minutes.

So:

Knicks post-trade w/Billups and Douglas: +1 per 31.25 minutes
Knicks post-trade with Douglas alone on the floor: +4.6 points per 31.25 minutes

But let’s not forget the Billups side:

Knicks units of Billups w/Douglas: +1 per 31.25 minutes
Knicks units of Billups w/o Douglas: +9.5 per 31.25 minutes.

One point guard on the floor at a time, Mike D’Antoni.

That is all.

Keep 'em apart.
