Shonn Greene is so limited: an inside runner with no moves and who is not reliable in the passing game or even in pass protection.
LaDainian Tomlinson is no longer fast enough to turn the corner and he’s not strong enough to get yards after contact running between the tackles.
Forget about Bilal Powell, who showed zippo when given some opportunities in Denver and even fumbled a goal-line carry.
So that leaves the man that Rex Ryan wants to convert to a cornerback — Joe McKnight.
We do know that McKnight has elite speed and can definitely turn the corner. He also has good enough hands that the Jets have spread him out as a wideout. But the knock on him is that he can’t run inside given that he’s 5-11, 200. His durability is also a question mark. Yet he had 32 carries for 158 yards in the regular season finale where he played with the second team but against the Bills starters on defense. That shows some workhorse chops, for sure. And many of those runs were between the tackles.
I do not like guys being dismissed in sports before they get the chance to prove whether or not they can do something. There have been other 5-11, 200-pound running backs who ran between the tackles. Just in the last 10 years, here are the ones with 250-plus carry seasons (had to be between 5-10 and 6-0 and between 190 and 205 pounds):
