Sometimes head coaches are just pulling your leg

I didn’t see Rex Ryan’s press conference live today, so I have no idea if he was holding in a laugh as he relayed this thought:

Rex Ryan expects Brian Schottenheimer to be back with the New York Jets next season unless the embattled offensive coordinator gets a head coaching job elsewhere.

Maybe it’s the power of suggestion at play. Perhaps Ryan feels that if he talks about Schottenheimer as a hot coaching candidate, the perception will become reality.

You can bet your Weeb Ewbank poster that Schottenheimer won’t get any offers to run an NFL club next year. There’s zero percent chance of that happening. Maybe a college program likes him, or maybe there’s an opening at Springfield High. I wouldn’t know about that. But the failure of the 2011 Jets offense (27th in total yards) and the flattening of Mark Sanchez’s development hasn’t been lost on the rest of the league. There’s blood on the headset.

If any other NFL team decides to interview Schottenheimer, for any opening, Ryan and the rest of the Jets should quietly say “thank you” under their breath. Meanwhile, continue to praise the man in public. You never know.
